: Should you keep newborn kids and mother in the herd where the mother has been for several months? Also when should they go out to pasture?
I usually keep my new mom and her kids stalled or penned separately for the first few days...giving them a little bonding time alone. Then depending on the doe's mothering experience, attitude, and her level of anxiety, I let the new mom and kids out together when the rest of the herd is out browsing. She gradually feels more comfortable about leaving the babies behind and usually rejoins the rest to eat while the babies sleep in the barn. Before long the babies tag along with mom and play, sleep, or nibble near her while she is eating.
